Country estate done right at The Vyne
Not far from the town of Basingstoke and a little further from the J11 and Reading, lies The Vyne, in the Hampshire countryside.
This 16th-century country estate is as chocolate box looking as it gets. The house is as beautiful inside as it is outside. Rich wooden panelling and exotic furniture featured throughout as you might expect. On the outside, you are welcomed by a sprawling, immaculate lawn that leads down to the waterfront (where you are under strict instructions to not feed the swans and ducks) I was told this was due to tourists feeding them crisps and apparently it's bad for swans to get a taste for cheesy wotsits.
Walking around the grounds is a treat and you don't have long to walk to be rewarded as you will come across the beautiful wetland area. This space has a viewing platform to sit and admire the rare birds that frequent this area on a regular basis (You may have to be patient, so pack a snack if you plan on doing this)
After spending some time admiring the birds and maybe having a wander through the wetlands you can enjoy one of 3 woodland trails around the beautiful woodland that surround the property. You don't have to be a National Trust member to enjoy the woodlands and there is plenty of free parking on the approach road to the property if you like just doing this!
The Cafe on the site is small and is always over-run and short of space according to the staff, so be wary if you are planning on eating the delights it has on offer. There is also a small gift-shop offering all the usual National Trust gifting and some Vyne specific memorabilia.
Kids will love it here. There's a small waterfall, ducks, swans, birds, an enchanting woodland and an incredible house to wander around. Fans of history and fiction writing will also be fans of The Vyne due to its links with J.R.R Tolkien and its role in the beginning in the world famous 'Lord Of The Rings' That's all I say about that, the tales about that journey is fascinating with its links to this property.
A great day out for kids and adults alike with plenty to keep you busy. Take food and drink as Cafe does get very busy, especially if you are planning on some bird-watching and woodland exploring.
Take it easy,
